David Tremlett (St. Austell, Cornwall, 1945)

studies sculpture at the Royal College of Art in London. At the end of the 1970s, while traveling in Australia, Africa, Iran, Afghanistan and India, he is exposed to large polychrome surfaces covered by hand with pigments; he discovers the coloured powders, which are perfect for him to travel with. The small format characteristic of the first works is replaced by large-scale supports. In parallel, graphite is combined with the use of colour, from green to brown, to warm and iridescent colours. Starting from the 1980s, the practice of wall drawing gradually becomes the artist's main expressive mean. With time, this technique evolves, expanding both the colour spectrum and the supports on which he works, in a practice defined by the same as "sculptural", aimed at defining the space and the entire volume.  The way of putting down colours with bare hands occurs not only on the walls of architectural spaces, but also on paper. David Tremlett realizes wall drawings all over the world; we highlight his contribution to the Barolo Chapel together with Sol Lewitt; the British Embassy in Berlin; the British Council, Nairobi; the church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Villenauxe-la-Grande, France; Tate Britain and Bloomberg HQ, London. The artist participates in numerous solo and group exhibitions, in Italy and abroad; among the spaces in which he displays his works, it figures the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Stedeljik Museum, Amsterdam; Centre George Pompidou, Paris; Juan Miro Foundation, Barcelona; Galleria Civica di Arte Contemporanea, Trento; Musée de Grenoble, France; Centro d’Arte Contemporanea Pecci, Prato.

Studio G7 promoted the permanent wall drawing A New Light. Wall, Ceiling and Floor, 2003, at the Chapel of Santa Maria dei Carcerati, Palazzo Re Enzo and Palazzo Podestà, Bologna, Italy.
